Is Henry Cavill Gay?

As with any pubic (sorry, public ~ genuine typo) figure, there are bound to be rumours that jump on the gay bandwagon and conjure up conspiracies as to why an actor could be gay. Henry Cavill is no exception, and simply searching Google for “henry cavill gay” will list reams of articles on Henry’s apparent gayness.

People believe what they want to believe, and it’s up to you, the reader, to believe what you choose. If you wish Henry Cavill to be gay then you’re welcome to your opinion. If you’re looking to base your opinion on more substantial information then you could take note of Henry’s relationship with show-jumper Ellen Whitaker which has been public knowledge since February 2011.

As yet there has been no substantial evidence that Henry Cavill is gay, unless you’re a person who believes anything they read on the internet. Anyone can use an ounce of imagination to conjure up a tale relating to any actor being homo-sexual, and it only takes one naïve soul to spread the unsubstantiated rumour.

This article takes a look at two of the rumours on the internet today, and leaves you to question their plausibility. The aim of this article is not to slur Henry, but to provoke rational thought with his fans. After all, Henry’s personal life is his own and should remain that way.

Henry Cavill and gay actor Corey Spears

Henry Cavill and gay actor Corey Spears.

There have been a number of photographs of Henry Cavill with gay actor Corey Spears circulating the web. Allegedly, Corey posted said photos on Facebook, but (also allegedly) when Henry Cavill was queried about the photos they were removed without trace. Henry stated he was “not gay but had a number of gay friends“. This is understandable in the modern age and does not make a person gay, whether this is a factual quote or not.

On an alleged appearance with British gay chat show host Graham Norton, Norton asked if Henry preferred men or women. Cavill laughed and said he “wasn’t going to say if men were better in the sack than women.” I hasten to note that this alleged interview with Graham Norton can not be found on Youtube and there is no official record on the internet.

Don’t believe everything you read on the internet.

  1. Are you seriously asking us to believe you’re a half decent fan page when you’re printing stuff like this? This is a GROSS invasion of Mr. Cavill’s privacy. I don’t care one jot if people are straight, gay, bi or transgender, it’s their life, and their business – not mine and certainly not yours; especially if it leads to you publishing this utter tripe. The language used and the appalling plea for further information are both reprehensible in the extreme, and if, as you claim, you are a legitimate fan of Henry’s you should be utterly ashamed of yourself for posting this complete waffling excuse for an article.

    • Dale, the aim of this article is not to promote such rumours but to quash them or highlight them as the unsubstantial drivel that they are. I wished to challenge the readers to think for themselves instead of believing everything they read on the internet. You’re right that a person’s business is there own, but for anyone in the public eye there will be such slurs. It’s as unavoidable as the paparazzi. I apologise if any of the language in the article has caused offense, but other than the words ‘gay’ and ‘pubic’ I fail to see what words could offend you? I appreciate your comments and have made some slight changes to the text in the hope it clears up some of your anguish.

      • Firstly, thank you for your repsonse. It does count for something in my book that you took the time to reply and amend the article. However you seem to have missed my point.

The article itself is what needs deleting. There fact you’re posting this merely draws attention to the “issue” that is no-one’s business but Henry’s. Added to that, the photo of him and his friend is not your copyright and the article suggests it was taken from a Facebook account and then deleted. You should, therefore, be respectful of the owner’s privacy and not be publishing it, whether it’s only allegedly their picture or not.

Of all the good, solid, decent, positive things you could post about that Henry has a hand in (Superman, Immortals, training, inspiring people, etc) you’ve chosen to go with something that really not even be brought up; his personal life – and although you have now edited the text to point out Henry’s personal life is his own business, you’re still poking around in it by writing this article. My advice would be to delete this whole piece and write something decent. But I will take the opportunity to thank you again or taking the time to reply and amend the article.

        • Dale, I’ll reiterate that anyone in the public eye will be subject to gossip and speculation. It is unavoidable.

I attempt to maintain an unbiased opinion on all content on henry-cavill.info. The site may well be a ‘fan site’ (targeted at fans) but I state in the title it is a ‘resource’. By this I mean any resourceful information on Henry Cavill will be apt. What I deem inappropriate for this website is anything that slurs Henry Cavill, and I do not believe this post does. I am not making any statements saying that Henry Cavill is gay, I am merely highlighting rumours that are found elsewhere on the web. If anything, I bring to the fore that the rumours have no factual basis in proving that Henry Cavill is gay. Surely that’s pro-Henry Cavill?

Regarding your accusation of copyright infringement, I refer you to this article on fair use:

          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_use

The image in question was uploaded to a public forum with no attached copyright information. If the owner of the image contacts me to request removal or to credit them then fair enough. They would have to contact a number of websites and forums to do the same.

On a resourceful note, the photograph was taken on a Canon SD400 on 11th November 2007, using 1/500s, f/2.8, a focal length of 5mm, and no flash.

I hasten to add that I myself have a number of gay friends, on of which is in the porn industry. This doesn’t make me in any way gay, and I have no qualms about having gay friends.

Lastly, I do aim to give good, solid, decent, positive information on Henry Cavill on this website. It is dedicated to Henry Cavill after all.

          • Ah yes, the fair use get out clause for people who want to post pictures they shouldn’t. How did I know you’d try that old chestnut?

According to the fair use conventions in the article you mentioned the effect of the article is one of those considerations: I’m seriously doubting that salacious gossip that could be detrimental to how people view someone’s character and career is in there on the plus points. Oh,

What’s wrong with being gay? Let’s suppose, just for a moment that Mr Anyone read an article like this one. Whether it’s meant or not, it’s judgmental, and demeaning. What if Mr Anyone was gay or bi, and considering coming out to friends and family and ending a sham “straight existence”; and then they read this type of “Mr Anyone’s private life is his own but I’m going to stick my nose in anyway” article that presumes to know what’s going in Mr Anyone’s head. How dispiriting and depressing would it be?

How about an article that simply says “Mr Anyone’s private life is his own business, and we support him and his career. End of.”

For the record, I’m gay. I’m out (and it’s not easy to do, and yes, it really does get better!) I have many straight friends, but I don’t feel the need to proclaim that “having straight friends doesn’t make me straight”, because it’s not an issue. I have friends. Their orientation is not the reason I have them as friends; their friendship and good hearts and kind souls got them there.

I’m not going to debate this any further, as I’ve said what’s on mine (and many other people’s) mind, with this bad taste “commentary” on something you shouldn’t even be writing about.

          • Irrespective of fair use, how do you think the majority of blogs/fansites on the web get their photos? Do you believe every blog writer has the capacity to moonlight as paparazzi and take their own photos of their choice subject?

There is nothing in the article which is homophobic or prejudiced towards homosexuals. Far from it. Your responses seem slightly paranoid or a sign of insecurity. People have a right to live their life how they want and should be proud of being who they are. This is something that comes of age and experience.

An article saying “Mr Anyone’s private life is his own business, and we support him and his career. End of.” wouldn’t be that interesting, would it?

I’m sorry this article isn’t to your liking. May I suggest you bypass this website in the future if it offends you (and I’m sorry that it does)? You appear to be an intelligent man and your comments have been appreciated, so thank you.

  2. To have gay friends isn´t the reason to suspect a person to be gay.Only people with very limited mind can make conclusions like that nowadays!
Besides, Corey had said once already on his board, that Henry is not gay. Rumor-boards were fresh enough to even call him a liar covering for a closeted friend. How decent is that?
Henry, as mentioned above, has never been to Graham Norton show and never said those words.
Yes, there is a closed circle in google search list of rumor-spreading boards that claim that Henry is gay based on the fact, that he is a friend of Corey Spears. How decent is that I´m not even going to discuss , because it´s below my understanding.

That closed circle is : perez hilton – DL – WeHo Confidential-you with your “pubic” little article. Feeding up on each others imagination.
And that´ll be pretty much all about that.
No other proof than a couple of pics of very young Henry goofing around with his friends.
So, that all is just stirring an empty pott.
Totally agree with Dale about the damage caused by such sort of digging in private life. Especially in such a “pubic” tone and manner.

    • I shall re-quote from the article – “Henry stated he was “not gay but had a number of gay friends. This is understandable in the modern age and does not make a person gay”. As such, I wholeheartedly agree that it takes a very limited mind to make such conclusions.

The ‘pubic’ gag really was a genuine typo. Come on, it’s funny (slightly).

  3. I just want to say one thing about Henry Cavill to everyone out there. He is a very private person and he wants to keep it that way, I’m sure. If you look for photos of his family, of him before he was famous, of him with his fiancee, you won’t find any. Why? Because those are things that are his and his alone and the public doesn’t have to see everything? I mean come on people! Yes, he chose to be in the public eye, but he still has the right to have a private life as well. He is in fact human and just like the rest of us. If there are pictures of him with other people, such as gay friends, it is because the friends have posted them, as they have the right. If Henry is in fact gay or straight, what does it matter?! Yes, he’s gorgeous and sexy….but just because you don’t want him to play for the other team doesn’t mean he’s a bad person! I mean this for both sides! Stop bashing a man who is a gentleman and a good person just because he isn’t who you want him to be and because he doesn’t share is whole life with you.

    • Also just want to point out two things. First, I know the author of this article is not bashing Henry but others who have read this and gone on to post elsewhere (and use this page as reference) are. Also, if you look up the Graham Norton show on iMDb and on Wikipedia…anywhere actually that has a listing of his guests, you will not see Henry as ever having been on his show. Henry states in an interview on Jay Leno that he had never been on a talk show of any sort and that being on the Jay Leno show was his first.

      • I think this post and corresponding comments show these rumours as what they are – just rumours. If Henry had appeared on Graham Norton then there would certainly be factual information on it!

Having gay friends doesn’t make a man gay. Being gay shouldn’t have any reflection on him as a person, whether he’s gay or not. Being in the public eye and maintaining a private life leads the general public open to speculation, and that can’t be helped.

I realise I’ve caused a stir with this post, but with this website being a Henry Cavill resource I thought it worthwhile writing about the rumours and attempting to justify them or utterly disprove them for being nonsense.

Your original comment was very astute – no matter what the rumours, it’s irrespective of what he’s like as a person in his private life, and all evidence suggests he’s a very decent person.

Your comments are much appreciated, thank you.

        • Thank you. I totally agree with you and I want you to know that I honestly see what you were wanting in your post and the discussion you were trying to achieve. My post wasn’t in disapproval of your post, but of the disapproval of the sites that have taken what you have said and twisted it to be proof that he is gay. Again, if he is, he is. It is his life and his choice. As a woman, do I wish that it weren’t true? Of course! But, again, I believe that his choices are his own and he shouldn’t be judged for those choices or desires and he has a right to be looked as for his actions as a wonderful man who is kind and a gentleman to all. There IS proof of that! ;) Thank you for your responses and I admire your original post with what you were trying to do in getting people to actually think instead of believing everything they read and hear.

          • Perhaps it’s simply clever. With his personal life being a complete unknown, it means his homosexual fans can fantasise about him being gay, and his female fans can believe he’s straight. That means any Henry Cavill lover can long for their dream encounter with him…!

Matt Bomer, another candidate for Christian Grey in Fifty Shades, is gay is he not? I don’t believe it’s affected his fan base. In this day and age it’s more acceptable to be gay.

All we can focus on is Henry Cavill is a great guy, gay or straight!

          • Well said on your comment below. Couldn’t reply to it there, so I will here. Clever indeed and very true! I support him either way!
